Must -Buy Souvenirs When You Travel to Vietnam

Blessed with rich cultures and traditions, Vietnam encourages travelers to take its treasures home through its souvenirs for loved ones, which go far beyond the usual key chain or fridge magnet.
Here are some of our favorite gifts and sustainable souvenirs when you travel to Vietnam:

1. Silk

Silk in Vietnam is made in traditional hand-woven frames. Made from the cocoons of silkworms, silk is plentiful throughout Vietnam and comes in a variety of beautiful products. You can find many types of beautiful patterns, colors and sizes.
Prices start at around VND 70,000 per meter. Silk below that price is originating from China and of questionable quality. Premium quality silk goes for around VND 200,000 per metre.
Silk can be purchased in any city in Vietnam but 3 best places are Hoian Ancient Town, Hang Gai Street in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, Van Phuc Silk Village (near Hanoi).

2. Hand embroidery

The art of hand-embroidered pieces of clothing and framed silk pictures is one of the oldest Vietnamese handicraft traditions. Picturesque natural scenes like flowers, trees, animals, and birds are sources of inspiration for embroidery. In some shops, tourists can explain or sketch their individual ideas to the artist, who creates a personalized present for friends and family.
If you visit Da Lat, there is a workshop & gallery for marvelous and artful hand embroidery images upstairs in the central market.
You can buy a small hand embroidered product for around VND 500,000. For bigger pictures, the price can be VND 2,000,000 and above.

3. Ceramics and Pottery

Ceramic products have long been a typical souvenir of Vietnam. The idyllic life of Vietnamese people is exquisitely portrayed as painted illustrations on these porcelain cups.
There are a variety of ceramic products, including pots, bowls, plates, cups…which are very attractive and beautiful with different colors and patterns. All these pottery items are handcrafted based on traditional methods. Especially, if you have the opportunity to visit Hanoi, you should not miss visiting Bat Trang Pottery Village. Here, visitors can not only buy souvenirs made from ceramics at very cheap prices, but also learn by themselves and make ceramic products in their own style

4. Conical hat

Non la is made of bamboo cataphylls which enchant tourists with its romantic adornments. The non la is more than an indispensable tool for people in Vietnam: it has become a cultural symbol.
Depending on the quality, these hats cost between VND 30,000 and VND 110,000 at the souvenir shops while you can pick one up at the local market for only VND 10,000.
Where to buy conical hat: Binh Thanh market (Ho Chi Minh city), Old quarter (Hanoi), Dong Xuan market (Hanoi),…

5. Coffee

Vietnamese coffee is famous for its flavor and preparation and can be found almost everywhere, from coffee shops and local markets to shopping malls and also at the airport.
Vietnamese coffee packs make for a great gift from Vietnam for family and friends back home.
Vietnamese coffee is very diverse; each coffee type has a different coffee flavor. You can enjoy it in coffee shops from sidewalks, small alleys to luxury coffee shops. To buy coffee as a souvenir you can consider one of the following famous Vietnamese coffee: Weasel coffee, Robusta coffee, Arabica coffee, Cherry coffee, Moka coffee…
Where to buy Vietnamese coffee: Hanoi is considered to be the epicenter of Vietnam’s coffee culture. It is also possible to buy great coffee in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, and the central highlands of Tay Nguyen.

6. Guoc Moc (Wooden clogs)

Wooden clogs (guoc moc) were a sort of traditional footwear for men and women alike in the past. Being considered as quite old fashioned footwear, the real Vietnamese wooden clogs are hard to find. If you can find some around VND 150,000 then go for it.

7. Ao dai:

The national garment of this southeast Asian country, Áo Dài are wonderful Vietnam souvenirs. It will be a surprising gift for your mother, sister or grandmother. The price of a set of Ao Dai may vary, depending on the design, material, quality and different colors.
Áo Dài can be easily found in tailor shops in Vietnam. Hang Da Market (Hanoi) is a good place to shop for ready-made Áo Dài.
Alternatively, if you’re feeling fancy you could purchase the material first and then take it to a local tailor and get it custom made.

Tips to remember when shopping in Vietnam:
>You should expect to bargain for the items you’d like to buy as souvenirs. This may seem strange at first. However, bartering is the norm in local markets and many other places across Vietnam.
>If you’re looking to buy more than one item, always ask for a deal or combined discount and the total price will be reduced.
>Do not bargain in the early morning. Vendors do not welcome any bargaining in the early morning as they think that may affect the business for the whole day.

Culinary Vietnam Tour Experience During Tet Holiday

Culinary Vietnam Tour Experience During Tet Holiday

Voted as Asia’s best culinary destination by World Culinary Awards for the first time, culinary tours are ideal for those wishing to enjoy Vietnamese cultural and culinary experiences both in the urban and rural areas: from the bustle of Hanoi, the charm of Mekong Delta to peaceful rural mountain villages, and always, the hospitality and friendliness of Vietnamese people.

1. Is it worth experiencing culinary tours in Vietnam in January?

Vietnam is known for its diversity of cuisine. You may learn about Vietnam culture by enjoying traditional food, and cooking, or going to the local markets… through activities of culinary tours. In January, Vietnamese people prepare many kinds of special food for the Tet holiday, one of the most important holidays of the year. Each region of Vietnam has its different specialty. When travellers visit each destination, they can get worthy experiences from the place they visit.

2.Exploring Vietnam culinary tours through Tet holiday

During the Tet holiday in Vietnam, travellers can experience the diversity of Vietnamese cuisine in three revisions North, Central, and South.

Exquisite and ingenious tray of the North

The culinary culture of the Northern people focuses on presentation, so the Tet tray needs to be presented elaborately, meticulously and beautifully. Their tray not only emphasizes the delicious taste, but also looks full of colors symbolizing the four seasons of the year, which is also a wish for a prosperous new year.
Tet with the Northerners is not complete without “Banh chung” (Chung cake). The glutinous rice cake with mung bean and pork belly-filling, wrapped in “dong” leaves, has long played an important role in the history of Vietnamese communities. The scene of all family members gathering around a hot stove with the boiling “banh chung” pot on top has a special effect in releasing one’s mind from the hustle and bustle of life.
Although modern life has many changes, in the Tet tray in the North, there are always the dishes: “Chung” cake, jellied meat, pickled onion, fried spring rolls, and lean pork paste,…

Source: vnexpress international

The abundant Central style

Central people do not have “Chung” cake but they make Tet cake which have a similar flavor to “Chung” cake. Besides, they feature different types of cakes such as “banh in” (tapioca cake with mung bean paste), “banh to” (sticky rice cake), “banh la rang bua” (steamed rice cake).
If the North has pickled onions, the Central region is characterized by pickled daikon. The ingredients of this dish are quite simple, just carrots, papaya, cucumber, daikon… are pickled and salted, although it sounds easy to do, but to get a full-flavored pickle jar, it needs meticulousness and ingenuity.

Idyllic style in the Southern tray
The South is famous for being an idyllic land with simple, easy-going people, with rich natural products that do not need sophisticated processing to still captivate the taste buds.
Perhaps because of that, the culinary culture of the South on weekdays as well as New Year’s days is often simpler than that of the North and the Central. “Tet” cake, braised meat, and bitter melon soup are 3 typical dishes on Tet holiday in the Southern region
On New Year’s Day, people in the North eat “banh chung”, and people in the South eat “Tet” cake (also known as banh don). In addition to “Tet” cake, the indispensable savory dish on Tet holiday, whether rich or poor, is braised meat – also known as braised meat with eggs or braised meat in coconut water. The dish is a harmonious combination of yin and yang, of square pieces of braised pork with a round white egg submerged in sweet coconut water.
Adding a bowl of bitter melon soup with meat helps us feel all the flavors of life, bid farewell to the difficulties of the old year, and look forward to a better and luckier new year.
And whether it is the North, the Central, or the South, the cuisine of Vietnam’s traditional Tet holiday also has a unique, harmonious, and familiar flavor.

3. Top 3 Vietnam culinary tours you can explore in Vietnam

There are many types of culinary tours that help visitors discover the Vietnamese cuisine. Here are a few types of culinary tours that we recommend for you

Discovering Vietnamese cuisine in homestay tours

Currently, homestay establishments in Vietnam are not only growing in quantity but also focusing on service quality. In order for visitors to have memorable memories, along with embellishing the house premises, improving reception skills, connecting tourist routes, homestay establishments focus on exploiting regional culinary culture. Travellers can both relax, visit the natural scenery, and participate in making traditional Vietnamese dishes with the host such as wrapping Chung cake, making spring rolls, preparing dishes to worship the ancestors, learning how to arrange a five-fruit tray,…
