Le Thi Rieng Park – A Worth-Visiting Entertaining Center In Saigon

While many new entertainment and amusement centers have been established in Ho Chi Minh City, Le Thi Rieng Park still stays strong as a favorable playground for generations of Saigon-ers. This article will provide you an insight into the attractions of the Park as well as its significant historical value that most people are not aware of.

1. Why visit Le Thi Rieng Park?

Le Thi Rieng Park, or Tho Trang Park, belongs to District 10, Ho Chi Minh City. Established in 1983, this is the favorite destination for a night hangout or weekend picnics of Saigon-ers. The Park is named after Madam “Lê Thị Riêng”. She was a senior member of the Viet Cong Army (People’s Liberation Armed Forces of South Vietnam). Her tomb is situated in this park, also.

a. Design and structure of Le Thi Rieng Park

Le Thi Rieng Park covers an area of around 8 hectares. It is surrounded by 3 streets, namely the Cach Mang Thang Tam, Bac Hai, and Truong Son. In the park, there was a lake that was once a canal that links to Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe canal. Furthermore, near the entrance of the park, there are a traditional house and a memorial stele that commemorates The General Offensive and Uprising of Tet Mau Than 1968.

Besides housing the tomb of Ms. Le Thi Rieng, this park also situates a memorial monument to Sir Tran Phu – the very first general secretary of the Indochinese Communist Party, which is the Communist Party of Vietnam nowadays.

About 20% area of the park is used for business activities. It is home to a 1-hectare-wide Tho Trang Kid Playground, book stores, and food stalls.

b. The Park used to be a large cemetery

During the Republic of Vietnam, the area that Le Thi Rieng Park is located today was a cemetery that people called “Do Thanh” or “Chi Hoa”. This cemetery is 30 hectares wide and is situated close to Chi Hoa Prison – one of the highest security prisons in Vietnam.

The Tet Offensive in Lunar New Year 1968 had brought huge loss of lives of both parties, so the Saigon government decided to dig a massive hole amidst the cemetery to bury thousands of corpses at a time. Since then, superstitious rumors have it that the dead soldiers buried in the mass could not reincarnate and they often appear crying all over again. These stories have been chanted by the locals since then.

And that’s why the Saigon Long Hoa Buddhist Association decided to build Ti-Tsang (a Buddhist deity) statue here. The 0.75-meter wide statue is put on a 3-meter-high base and is made of black Italian stone that weighs up to 10 tons. In 1983, a clearance occurred in an attempt to turn this area into a green park. Therefore, the Ti-Tsang statue was unloaded and relocated to Guan Yin Monastery in Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province.
