Laos Welcome International Travellers from January 2022

Laos has just approved the " Laos Travel Green Zone'' program to welcome foreign tourists in January 2022. That contributes to the process of reopening the country after a long lockdown due to the impact of Covid-19. Finally, we will be able to travel to Laos in the next month!

1. “Lao Travel Green Zone” program was officially approved.

The Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control of Laos has approved the ” Laos Travel Green Zone” plan. Thereby, Laos will start welcoming international tourists from January 1, 2022. The purpose of the program is to both ensure safe tourism during the Covid-19 period and contribute to economic recovery. The program will generate income for people, service providers as well as increase revenue for the country.

Currently, the Laos Travel Green Zone is applied to the capital Vientiane, the town of Vangvieng and the ancient capital of Luangprabang. These are places that are eligible to ensure safety for tourists as well as service providers. To become a “Tourism Green Zone”, localities must have 70-80% of the population and 90-95% of service providers have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

2. Requirements of the “ Laos Travel Green Zone”

According to the “ Laos Travel Green Zone”, tourists entering Laos will have to meet required conditions as follows:

  1. Book a package tour.
  2. Declare information and travel schedules through the online system.
  3. Have to buy Covid insurance.
  4. Have a certificate of full dose vaccination and a negative test for SARS-CoV-2 virus within 72 hours before entry.

In addition, when arriving in Laos, they will have to isolate themselves for 24 hours at a hotel designated by the Covid Committee to wait for test results; use Laosafe app to track information and QR code during travel.

Children aged from 5-18 years old must be tested for Covid by PCR method, but not necessarily have a certificate of vaccination.. Children under 5 years old are not required to be tested for Covid-19.

3. Current situation of COVID-19 and Vaccination in Laos

According to the Lao Ministry of Health, 64.5% of adults in the country have been vaccinated against COVID-19. This is one of the significant steps for Laos to reopen the country in the near future.

As the record, more than 3.6 million people in Laos have been vaccinated with 1 dose of COVID-19 vaccine, accounting for more than 50% of the adult population. More than 3 million people have received 2 doses, equivalent to nearly 42%. population. The capital Vientiane has the highest number of people vaccinated in the country with the rate of 90%.

According to WHO, from 3 January 2020 to 15 December 2021, there have been 91,816 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 250 deaths in Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

After a long period of hybernating in isolation and co-existing with fellow human beings at a safe 6-meter distance, it is time to step out again. 2021 marked the first time people across the globe traveled since the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. Situation of International Flights Reopened in Southeast Asia

On 17 November 2021: From Singapore and Malaysia to Thailand and Vietnam, borders are reopening after 20 months of pandemic-induced restrictions and lockdowns.

Thailand’s reopening boosted tourism businesses and provided a ray of hope in Asia for the region’s airline industry. The country dropped quarantine restrictions for visitors from 63 low-risk countries on Nov 1. Some islands of Thailand are open to tourists from all countries. Travelers must be fully vaccinated and be able to provide a negative COVID-19 test.

Singapore has gradually reopened through its Vaccinated Travel Lane system. In December, it had 21 VTLs. Singapore had earlier announced Vaccinated Travel Lanes with 16 other countries. Thirteen of these are already in effect, and three more with Malaysia, Sweden and Finland are due to start on 29 November.

Travellers from Indonesia and India entered Singapore under a quarantine-free travel scheme from 29 November. In addition, travellers from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are allowed to enter Singapore from 6 December.

Indonesia has yet to open its borders for quarantine-free travel from Singapore. But travellers can travel without quarantine to and from India, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE, which had already opened their borders for vaccinated travellers from Singapore.

In Malaysia, fully vaccinated foreign travellers can now visit Langkawi Island with no quarantine restrictions from 15 November. Malaysia has also announced that its borders should fully reopen to foreigners on 1 January 1 at the latest.

Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to implement a travel corridor between the two countries through the Vaccinated Travel Lane arrangement, and more details will be announced at a later stage.  The relevant ministers will refine the initiative so that the border between the two countries – involving the Kuala Lumpur-Jakarta-Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur -Bali- Kuala Lumpur routes – could be opened. On 14 October, Indonesia opened its doors to travellers from 19 countries visiting Bali and the Riau Islands.

Malaysia hopes that the travel lane with Indonesia can start in early 2022. Indonesia has no vaccinated travel lane (VTL) with other countries, but Malaysia announced its first VTL with Singapore is now due to start 29 November.

In Cambodia, where more than 87% of the population of nearly 17 million has been vaccinated against Covid-19, the country’s Prime Minister announced the country was opening immediately to fully-vaccinated tourists without quarantine. It is good news for the travel trade in Siem Reap, the country’s most popular destination and the beach resorts and islands of Sihanoukville.
